It is time again for the Independent Cat Society's Sweetheart Contest. This year we have 10 wonderful cats competing for the title of Sweetheart of the Year. The cats have Team Leaders who work to raise votes/donations for their respective cat. The cat receiving the most votes/donations wins the title of ICS 2012 Sweetheart of the Year. The contest runs until February 29th and all votes/donations must be received or postmarked by that date to be counted.

You can vote in several ways, you can visit our website, www.catsociety.org and click on the PayPal emblem and indicate you are placing your vote for the sweetheart of your choice. You can mail a check, made payable to the ICS, to ICS Sweethearts Contest, PO Box 735, Westville, IN 46391. Please be sure to indicate on your check your choice for the Sweetheart of the Year. Or you can come to our shelter, Saturdays 10 am to 4 pm or Sundays 1 pm to 4 pm, and meet the sweetheart candidates in person and put your vote in there. Our phone at the shelter is (219) 785-4936.

Sweet Pete is almost perfect!

Sweet Pete
He's lovable, playful, good with other dogs and children. He is also neutered, current on vaccinations, microchipped, and crate trained. Just one thing he doesn't like: kitties. Pete, who is only about one year old, would do best in a home without cats--a fenced yard to play in would be nice, too! If you are interested in this pet, please contact Last Chance Rescue, (219) 677-2961
From 6-5-11:
Mazey is amazing! This friendly, perky girl would make a great pet for an active single, couple or family.

Mazey
She's about a year old, 30 pounds, and has lots of energy, so a fenced yard is a must. She is spayed and current on vaccinations. If you're interested in this cute girl, please contact Last Chance Rescue, (219) 677-296
From 6-5-11
Both Gleek (tabby), 13 years, and Gleek Jr. (black and white), 9 years, are loving and friendly cats. They have been neutered, are current on vaccinations, and are in good health. They must be adopted together as they have been together their whole lives.

Gleek

Gleek, Jr.
If you are interested in this cute pair, please contact Last Chance Rescue, (219) 677-2961.

What a looker! Romeo’s former owner had major surgery and could no longer care for him, so he’s looking for a new home. This gorgeous shepherd is used to being the apple of his owner’s eye, so he’s probably best as an only pet in an adult household. Romeo is about 5 years old, is housebroken, current on vaccinations, and neutered.

Romeo
Sierra, Romeo's sister, also lost her home when her owner had major surgery and could no longer care for her. Sierra is very sweet and gets along with other dogs. She is about 2 years old and would do best in an adult household. She is spayed and current on vaccinations.

Sierra
If you are interested in adopting either Romeo or Sierra or both, contact Last Chance Rescue at (219) 677-2961.
Added 5-18-11
Scooter and Pita need a knight in shining armor! Scooter (black) is 7 years old and Pita is 5. We need to find them a home, or at least a foster home. If foster, we would provide all food and litter. Because their owner has allergies, they are having to live in a garage, and needless to say, they are both very depressed. They are brother and sister and as you can see, can't be separated! Scooter is very loving and social, great with kids of all ages, and very playful! Pita is sweet, and just a little more shy than Scooter. If you're interested in adopting or fostering this sweet pair, please contact Last Chance Rescue at (219) 677-2961.

Scooter & PitaScooter is very loving and social, great with kids of all ages, and very playful! He’s so sweet that he’ll warm up the foot of the bed for you! Scooter is on a special diet where he needs to eat canned food only. And Pita (tortoiseshell) is Scooter's cat! She is sweet, particularly when you are paying attention to just her. She is a little shyer than Scooter, especially when there's more commotion going on in the house.
They are both fixed and current on vaccinations. If you are interested in adopting these siblings, please telephone Last Chance Rescue at (219) 677-2961. Find our other adoptable pets on Petfinder and Facebook.

Two-year-old Luna is a good dog and a much loved family pet. Unfortunately, Luna does not get along with a smaller dog in the household, and a family medical condition makes it increasingly hard for the family to care for her.
Luna does get along with other dogs her size, and of course, she loves kids and adults. She is potty trained and walks well on a leash and does not pull. She is affectionate and loves attention.
Luna would probably do well in a home with one other dog her size, or she'd be fine as an only dog, too. Wouldn't you love to add this gentle giant to your home? She's just beautiful!
If you are interested in adopting Luna, please telephone Last Chance Rescue for the quickest response: (219) 677-2961.

Doc and Larry were recently returned to the ICS due to serious health issues of one of their caregivers.

For more information regarding Doc and Larry or any of our other “pairs” please contact the Independent Cat Society at (219) 785-4936 or visit our website www.catsociety.org To help us continue to care for these and all our other wonderful cats please send your donation to ICS, PO Box 735, Westville, IN 46391

Two sweets for Valentine's Day! Candy and Cookie are sisters who want to be adopted together. These gorgeous five-year-olds lost their home because their owner had to move and could not take them. They are spayed, current on vaccinations, and litter box trained. If you are interested in adopting these beautiful sisters, please telephone Last Chance Rescue at (219) 677-2961 for the fastest response. Thank you!

Candy...

...and Cookie
Jethro is a handsome 8-year-old has had obedience classes and welcomes dogs into his yard to play. He likes to fetch, chew sticks, and run around. He even carries his water dish and puts it where he thinks it should go! Jethro loves people, but he is wonderful guard dog, too. He is trained on an invisible fence, so he would need the same type of fence or a physical fence to contain him, because he doesn’t know to stay in the yard and he likes to chase cars. Jethro is currently an outside dog. He is kennel trained, so he stays in the kennel at night or when it is cold. We don’t know if he would want to be an indoor dog, but Goldens do love to be with people, so it might be worth a try. If you are interested, telephone Last Chance Rescue at (219) 677-2961 for the fastest response.

In response to the immediate and critical need to rescue the llamas at the Montana Large Animal Sanctuary, Northeast Llama Rescue (NELR) in collaboration with Southeast Llama Rescue (SELR), Southwest Llama Rescue (SWLR), Llama Association of North America's Lama Lifeline Committee (LANA Lifeline) and several other Llama Associations is soliciting immediately needed funds for transportation of the llamas to their new homes. A specific fund has been earmarked for the re-homing of the Montana llamas. This will be an ongoing effort until all llamas are off the property. Plans are now in place to immediately move 70-90 llamas out of the Montana Large Animal Sanctuary. This particular group of animals will go to NELR and SELR stations in Indiana, Missouri and New York for assessment and placement. Unfortunately, transportation to anywhere is extremely costly. This first round of transport will be occurring immediately and funds are desperately needed. Please visit NELR at: www.northeastllamarescue.blogspot.com and SELR at: www.SoutheastLlamaRescue.org to support this effort through your generous donation. NELR and SELR are recognized 501(c)(3) organizations.

Toto, two-year-old, male Terrier mix

Special note from the Independent Cat Society: They really are the best cats. They are both friendly, and not even put off by strangers...
they love everyone... we are so desperate because the last FeLV+ cat we housed at the shelter deteriorated rapidly when he was caged. We do not want to have to do this... they are both so sweet.
Anyone who has any questions about Petey and Sox or the condition of Feline Leukemia can call Sue Ogg at 219-733-9512
As you can see above, Petey and Sox are a handsome pair. Besides good looks, they also share a secret you wouldn’t know unless we tell you: they are both FeLV positive, and it’s time they had a real home of their own.
Petey’s care in ICS’ foster system began with companions who were also FeLV+. Within the first year of his life, they all passed, so Petey was left alone. Then came Sylvester, a wonderful Tuxedo cat who was also FeLV+. Sadly, Sylvester also passed over the Rainbow Bridge, which left poor Petey alone again.
Meanwhile, Sox was living comfortably in Indianapolis, oblivious to ICS and Petey... till his owner passed away.
Most shelters will not accept cats who are known to test positive for FeLV, but ICS takes a different approach: we believe there is a place for EVERY adoptable cat, and we consider FeLV cats to be adoptable! So lucky Sox was admitted to ICS to be a companion to Petey, who was left alone too many times...
Now Petey and Sox are together, but they are still in limbo. They are in foster care along with many other cats, so their “human time” is at a minimum. It is time for them to move to their forever homes. They have their own room, but it’s not like having their own HOUSE to roam.
Petey and Sox need a home, either as an only cats or as companions to other FeLV+ cats. They are both extremely affectionate, and not just with caretakers. They are that way with anyone who has hands to pet... they are enegetic and playful, but Petey has been known to cry when he is lonely for human company. Petey is just over 2 years old, and Sox is going on 7 years old. They are both asymptomatic at this point, and their bloodwork is completely normal. FeLV can reside in a cat's bone marrow for many, many years before manifesting itself... it may show suddenly, or never at all.
Such is the way with FeLV, and we don't know at this point what course it will take for Petey or Sox. We do know that they need more companionship than we can give them at this moment. They both may have many, many years of happy-living and making you laugh.
FeLV is strictly a feline disease... it CANNOT be transmitted to humans or dogs. If you want to make a difference in the lives of this two wonderful boys, please consider adopting them or becoming a permanent foster. Our knowledgeable staff can guide you through the process of adopting and caring for this very special pair.
If you can help these boys, please call the Independent Cat Society at 219-785-4936.

Kain is such a good boy. Although he was a stray and we don’t know much about him, he seems good natured and loves to play in a fenced back yard. We think he’s about a year old. Right now, he stays in a heated garage, but he would so love to have a family to call his own. He hopes that might be your family. Before he is adopted, Kain will be neutered and current on his vaccinations. If you are interested in Kain, please call Last Chance Rescue at (219) 677-2961.
Hope
Hope is seven years old, healthy, and weighs about 12 pounds. Hope has beautiful blue eyes and is part Siamese, which means she will talk to you when you talk to her. She loves to curl up on a piece of fleece by the radiator for a good part of the day. Hope thinks she is a dog, because she comes at the sounds of her name and greets you when you come home. Her favorite toys are her balls and also bugs! She loves to cuddle and sits in your lap when you are reading or working on the computer. Hope is a smart, affectionate cat who loves people, but tolerates being alone as well. She is a wonderful companion and will make her new person very happy. Hope is spayed and up to date on vaccination. If you are interested in adopting this wonderful pet, please telephone Last Chance Rescue at (219) 677-2961 for the fastest response. Find our other adoptable pets on petfinder and facebook.

Champ
Champ, who is about 7 years old, loves people and craves the attention he has never had in the past. A quiet home with a single person or couple would be great for Champ. He is neutered and current on vaccinations. If you are interested in this wonderful pet, please telephone Last Chance Rescue at (219) 677-2961 for the fastest response. See our other pets on petfinder.com and facebook.

Penny
Penny wants love and lots of it! Abandoned, Penny found a kind couple to let her in from the cold, but their older cat won’t accept her. Penny is about one year old, is spayed and housetrained and current on vaccinations.

Jodi’s owner died and Jodi had nowhere to go. Although she is hard of hearing, she is extremely affectionate and is good with other dogs and cats. Jodi is about seven years old, 45 pounds, and is housebroken.

Someone once said, “Love is not blind; it simply enables one to see things others fail to see.” Although Flick is blind, he still “sees” the goodness in people. Rescued from a junkyard, Flick is now searching for a family to call his own. This golden lab mix is about three years old and is about 55 pounds. You would never know he’s blind, as he gets around very well and has no fear. He’s good with children and other dogs, but not cats. He is neutered, current on vaccinations. If you are interested in this wonderful pet, please telephone Last Chance Rescue at (219) 677-2961. See our other pets at http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/IN325.html and on facebook.
