NIPSCO Announces New Mobile Meter Readers

Company officials say estimated bills for NIPSCO customers could soon be a thing of past. The utility today announced mobile meter readers are coming. The multi-year project to upgrade gas and electric meters across the northern part of the state is expected to improve customer service, efficiency and safety. South Shore Service Resumes

South Shore service has resumed with westbound Train 14 and eastbound Train 7 following a derailment in Michigan City early this morning. The westbound train was running about 20 minutes late, and the eastbound train is expected to be running about a half-hour late. Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District says they expect regular westbound South Shore service to resume with Train 14 scheduled to arrive in Chicago at 10:28 a.m. with an expected delay of approximately 15-20 minutes.

All South Shore trains scheduled to arrive in Chicago after 6:40 a.m. remains temporarily suspended due to a derailment in Michigan City. There are no injuries but service is affected. New Credit Card Surcharge Possible

As of this past weekend, a new credit card surcharge, up to 4 percent, is allowable in 40 states, including Indiana and Illinois. Ten states have barred retailers from charging the fee. Lake County May Get Veterans Court

There's a measure on its way to the Indiana Senate that would create a special veterans court in Lake County. House Bill 10-16 establishes a pilot project in Lake County allowing the county council to put funds from the county drug free community fund toward the cost of what's described as a “problem solving court program” that may provide rehabilitative services.

Work Coming Soon on New Valpo Roundabout

The wheels are in motion to open bids in a couple months for Valparaiso's next, and perhaps most high-profile roundabout. City officials say construction on the five-points roundabout, which would be on north Calumet Avenue, where it meets up with Vale Park and Roosevelt Roads, might then be able to start this spring.

Most South Shore trains have been temporarily suspended due to a derailment in Michigan City. There are no injuries but service is affected. We expect this disruption to affect nearly all of the morning rush hour. Trains 110 and 112 will depart East Chicago at the scheduled time making all stops. Limited seating will be available. Bill Would Change NICTD Bd Membership

A Lake County state lawmaker has introduced legislation that would bump up Lake County membership on the South Shore governing board from two members to five. Freezing Rain Advisory for the Region

Look out for hazardous driving conditions around the Region for Sunday. We could see freezing rain, possibly mixed with a short period of sleet, with temperatures just above the freezing mark. Today's Times reports an unrelated investigation has lead to two 19 year old men each being charged with felony child molestation. A 19 year old Indianapolis man is expected to face numerous charges after leading police on a high speed chase on I-65 in excess of 110 miles per hour.
