NICTD Suspends Service Today Update

11:15am:

NICTD reports all train service has been suspended for most of the day due to a crash this morning on I-90 involving a semi that reportedly lost its load of steel on the tracks east of the Gary Metro Station. While no passenger trains were involved, there is extensive damage to the overhead wire and track, and South Shore maintenance crews are working to get the issue resolved.  For further updates follow this link: http://www.nictd.com/delays.html.

Weather Conditions Cause Numerous Indicents

Slippery condition are caused numerous traffic headaches for motorists this morning in the region. Tipsters were reporting multiple vehicle spin outs and crashes all over area roadways, that resulted in some roads being shut down for a time. Indiana State Police report six vehicles collided on I-65 northbound near the Merrillville exit. Authorities report several people were transferred to area hospitals, but that none of the injuries appear to life threatening at this time.

Gary Gun Buyback Today

City officials say five churches in Gary will serve as drop-off sites for the city's next Gun Buyback scheduled today from 8am-to-4pm. Gary Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson's office says Wal-Mart Gift Cards will be issued to those who turn in guns: Hand Guns, Shotguns/Rifles: $50.00, and Assault Weapons: $100.00.

Fire South of Kouts Blocking SR 49 Traffic

Authorities were dealing with a reported shed fire this morning just south of Kouts. Porter County dispatch reports State Road 49 is closed to traffic, from East 900 South to north to the Kouts Public Branch Library. Tipsters reporting traffic coming into Porter County from Jasper County on State Road 49 are being detoured away from the scene. No further information is available at this time.

A Portage man was sent back to jail today for violating terms of his pretrial supervision, regarding a fatal crash earlier this year. On Monday, the South Shore Civil War Memorial Trail will be hosting a ceremony honoring a Valparaiso Civil War veteran who would later go on to become Mayor of Valparaiso. NB I-65 Reopens Near Lowell

In Lake County, northbound I-65 was shut down for more than five hours this morning after troopers say a semi tractor-trailer overturned around 4:30 this morning near the State Road 2 – Lowell exit. Indiana State Police say the truck was hauling barrels of industrial lubricant and there was a lot of cleanup involved. No word at this time if the product itself got onto the roadway. Man Arrested for Alleged Facebook Threats

In Portage, the Times reports a 19-year-old man has been arrested and charged with felony intimidation after allegedly posting threats on Facebook to “go on a rampage” and that “portage people might be dying soon”. The report says the man told police he had no intention of carrying out the threats and did not have an answer when questioned why he didn't stop making the posts after a family member and others asked him to stop.

5am – Lake County/Lowell -- All lanes of northbound I-65 are closed near State Road 2 due to a crash. Authorities advising motorists to seek alternate routes as you travel northbound on I-65 near mile marker 240.0.
