JELL-O Drive for Merry Meals

Members of Boys & Girls Clubs of Porter County are collecting boxes of Jell-O to help Merry Meals provide food baskets for 500 families in need this holiday season. Their goal is to help collect 1,000 boxes of Jell-O by December 19th.

Washington, D.C.  — Congressional Steel Caucus Chairman Rep. Tim Murphy (PA-18) and Vice-Chairman Rep. Winter Coat Drive Continues

Organizers are reminding people that there still is time to donate to Tri-Creek Lumber and Hardware's 6th Annual Coat Drive, but only through December 29th. Nancy Panozzo of Tri-Creek Lumber says the coat drive started about six years ago "when there was interest from the community."  Panozzo says "someone found out about it and that the need was great at St. Jude's house in Crown Point."  She says then churches in town were contacted and discovered a need there too for warm, winter clothing.

DNR Catches Fisherman Over the Limit

Indiana Conservation Officers cited three Illinois men for keeping over their limit of perch on Lake Michigan. Arturas Barkauskas 40, Arturas Ragauskas 39, and Arnoldas Pelesinas 40, all were cited when they were checked and had 58 perch in their boat. The daily limit is 15 per fishermen which put them 13 fish over the limit. Riley Choate Pleads Guilty

The man who faced a murder charge in the beating death of his son pleaded guilty to multiple charges of neglect and death of his 13-year old son. The Times is reporting that 40-year old Riley Choate, formerly of Gary, plead guilty in Lake Criminal Court on Friday in exchange for a lesser prison sentence. According to the article, police discovered Christian Choate's severely malnourished body in May of 2011 from a shallow grave in a Gary mobile home park.

IFS to Expand NWI Operations

 Indiana Flame Service (IFS), a  technology services contractor, announced plans today to expand its operations here, creating up to 24 new jobs by 2015.

The company will invest $14 million to upgrade technology and equipment at its Burns Harbor and Gary operations. In addition, IFS plans to relocate a portion of its research and development from Fresse Sur Moselle, France to Burns Harbor.

Region Journalist Passes Away

Northwest Indiana lost a friend and equitable voice of the people.  Long time staff writer and columnist for the Times, Mark Kiesling passed away Thursday afternoon.  The Times is reporting, Kiesling informed and amused the area for nearly three decades with solid reporting and incisive observations.  A friend who was with the journalist says 56-year old Kiesling suffered a seizure and was rushed to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.  A Munster High School and I-U graduate, Kiesling...

A 33 year old LaPorte County Jail Officer was being held in the LaPorte County Jail at last check after being charged with two-felony counts of burglary. A 28 year old Chicago man has been charged in the June 21st, 2011, death of of his Highland girlfriend and the death of her unborn child. The Times reports Isiah Barker was taken into custody after an investigation by numerous law enforcement agencies. A 34 year old Hammond woman was killed Thursday afternoon at a Gary hair salon. The Lake County Coroner's Office reports Antoinetta Johnson was shot multiple times at Visions of Beauty Hair Salon, located on the one-thousandth block of West 5th Avenue, and her death has been ruled a homicide. The Portage Fire Department is asking for the public's help involving a suspicious structure fire in the 2500 block of Hamstron Rd. A 21 year old Gary man could be facing auto theft charges after police arrested him Wednesday night. A 38 year old Indianapolis man shot and killed in Portage Monday died of single gunshot wound to the left side of the neck. A multi-state settlement with drug maker Pfizer on Wednesday, worth 42.9 million dollars, has Indiana set to receive 1.1 million dollars.
