Lake Village Death Ruled Accidental

The Lake County Coroners office says a 71-year-old woman was pronounced dead shortly after 7-o'clock this morning at a Lake County hospital. A news release says Darlene Denton suffered smoke inhalation in a field just east of her home off of State Road 10 in Lake Village and her death has been ruled accidental. Lake County Police, Newton County EMS and Fire also responded. No other information was available at this hour.

Indiana Flu Deaths Up to 61

Indiana State Health officials say even though this year's flu shot was less effective than thought, it was still helpful in reducing hospitalizations and deaths. Sixty-one flu-related deaths have now been reported in Indiana, three more than the week before, most of the individuals being 65 and older, according to the latest weekly influenza report from the Indiana State Department of Health.

Purdue West Lafayette Announces Tuition Freeze

Purdue says it will freeze tuition and most fees at current rates for the next two years at the West Lafayette campus. "In this period of national economic stagnation," Purdue President Mitch Daniels said,  it's time to "hit the pause button on tuition increases".  The last year without a tuition hike was 1976.  Tuition at Purdue's regional campuses is determined separately, and today's announcement does not pertain to Purdue Calumet in Hammond or Purdue North Central in Westville.

Portage Mayor Gives 2013 State-of-the-City Address

To show how far the city has come in just one year, Portage Mayor, Jim Snyder started his 2013 address by citing last year's theme, which was "Portage is in a state of much-needed correction."  Mayor Snyder said "communication" is the key to this year's message.

Lake County E-911 Director Resigns

Lake County is in need of a new E-911 Director, after Jeffery Cicillian announced his resignation Thursday morning during the E-911 Advisory meeting. Lake county is in the midst of a state-mandated consolidation of its dispatch centers, that if not completed by the end of next year will mean the loss of E-911 dollars from the state.

Major Indiana Jobs Announcement by Chrysler

Governor Mike Pence joined executives from Chrysler in Kokomo to announce the company's plans to invest 374 million dollars to expand its operations in north central Indiana, creating up to 1,250 new jobs by 2015. California Men Jailed After Region Traffic Stop

Two men from California were taken to the Jasper County Jail after police say a traffic stop on I-65 a few miles south of the Demotte exit Thursday afternoon turned up three suitcases of cash totaling about 315-thousand dollars. Indiana State Police at the Lowell Post say in talking to the driver the trooper became suspicious of possible drug activity. The officer was assisted by his K-9 and Hobart Police. The suspects were arrested on a Class-C felony money laundering charge .

Chocolate Marshmallow Eggs Recalled

Zachary Confections out of Frankfort, Indiana,  has recalled certain lots of its Chocolate Covered Marshmallow Eggs and suspended further production because the treats have the potential to be contaminated with salmonella.  The voluntary recall of the popular Easter treat was announced after a test of one lot detected salmonella. MC Artspace Not on IHCDA 2013 Project Fund List

An estimated ten-million dollar project that is expected to strongly impact the downtown economy of Michigan City was not on the list of projects by the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority to be funded with tax credits in 2013. Mayor Ron Meer says while they are disappointed Artspace will not be funded, the city and Artspace are both deeply committed to the implementation of this project, and will pursue funding in the next funding cycle for the Uptown Artist Lofts.

Lyndon Davis Found Guilty in Death of Parrish Myles

The Lake County Prosecutor's Office announced today that Lyndon Davis was found guilty of murder for his role in 2011 shooting death of Parrish Myles in a parking lot in Griffith. Davis is scheduled to be sentenced on April 4th, and faces 45 to 65 years in prison. Davis's uncle, Robert Davis, the man identified as the one who shot Myles, has already been convicted for murder.

Illinois Man Gets 45 Years for Attempted Murder

A 48 year old Hazel Crest, Illinois, man was recently sentenced to 45-years in prison for the attempted murder of an elderly man, according to an announcement made today by the Lake County Prosecutor's Office. David Harman was convicted earlier this year by a Lake County Court jury for a knife attack on J.R. Jenkins in May of 2011, in Hammond. The Prosecutor's Office reports Jenkins was hospitalized for nearly two-months after being punched, kicked, and his throat slashed during Harman's attack...
