N Newton Students Back to Class

North Newton High School students have returned to classes after being evacuated from the school after an alleged bomb threat today. Superintendent Brian Smith says someone wrote down a bomb threat in one of the bathrooms, so following protocol, officials evacuated students around 11:30 this morning. Superintendent Smith says authorities made a couple of sweeps of the school, and after deeming things to be safe, the evacuation was lifted by 1pm, and students returned to classes. Smith says...

 

Alleged Bomb Threat at N Newton HS

North Newton High School students have been evacuated from the school after an alleged bomb threat today. Officials at the school report a precautionary evacuation took place, but students have not been released. According to a parent of a student at the school, the incident began around 11:30 am today, and that students are being kept away from the school, by the bus barn. No further information is available at this time.

Water Main Break in Hammond

Hammond Water Department crews are repairing a water main break along 179th Street this morning, and 179th is closed at Kennedy Avenue. We're told the businesses are open in that area and you can access 179th from Cline Avenue. The break is in the vicinity of 179th and Parrish, so a stretch of 179th east from Kennedy is closed at this time.  179th Street is a service road just south of the Borman Expressway (Interstate 80/94).

Hammond Port Authority to Hold Public Meeting

In Hammond, the city's Port Authority is holding a public meeting this afternoon to talk about the Hammond Beach Shoreline Stabilization Project. The meeting is scheduled to start at 2 pm. New Fireworks Fines in Merrillville

Merrillville has approved big fines for big fireworks, fireworks like M-80s and cherry bombs and others banned by federal law, according to the Times today... it comes after officials heard concerns about fireworks in town. Train Service Restored Wednesday Night

Afternoon rush hour Wednesday for the South Shore Line was affected by a disabled train in East Chicago, and five trains, three eastbound and two westbound, ended up being canceled last night. Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District officials say overhead wire damage caused by an earlier eastbound train temporarily suspended service east of Hammond shortly after 5 pm. NICTD says service was able to resume a little after 7-o'clock Wednesday night.

Flood Damaged Used Cars Reaching Midwest

The Secretary of State in Illinois is warning consumers looking to buy used vehicles to beware of flood-damaged vehicles from Hurricane Sandy. Jesse White says his office is screening title applications from states impacted by the super storm to determine if vehicles are registered in a flood county.

Hoosier Lottery officials say last night's Powerball drawing with an estimated jackpot of 185- million-dollars didn't go unnoticed. Ticket sales at retailers around Indiana were said to have been picking up steadily with each passing draw without a jackpot winner. There were no jackpot winners last night either, so the estimated jackpot for Saturday's drawing is up to 214-million dollars.

Shooting Suspect Surrenders to Police

Portage Police say a 20-year-old Gary man accused of shooting a 72-year-old tow truck driver from Portage in the victim's front yard earlier this month turned himself in yesterday. Police say Dontaye Singletary is being held at the Porter County Jail with no bond. On Tuesday, police announced another suspect, 42-year-old Sheurice Major of Portage, had been arrested on murder and conspiracy charges.
