Ball State Doesn't Renew 7 Charter Schools

Some Region Roadwork Canceled Due to Cold

The Indiana Department of Transportation says scheduled road work for the overnight last night on I-80/94 in Lake and Porter Counties was canceled for the safety of their workers due to the extreme cold . Pothole patching scheduled for overnight tonight , east and westbound on 80-94 between I-65 in Gary and State Road 249 in Portage, (Tuesday night – Wednesday morning) and on I-65 between the Borman and US 30 this Wednesday and Thursday night is dependent on the weather.

10:27am -- Indiana State Police at the Toll Road report one lane of the eastbound Indiana Toll Road in La Porte County is open after an earlier crash. Authorities say one person had to be cut out of his vehicle, but the injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. There are three main reasons why water pipes freeze. Wind Chill Advisory in Effect for the Region

A wind chill advisory is in effect from the National Weather Service through 10 am Tuesday morning. Wind Chills of between 15 degrees below zero and 25 degrees below zero are possible in the Region and Chicagoland vicinity. The weather service urges people to limit any outdoor activity and reminds everyone that frostbite can occur to exposed skin in 30 minutes.

In downtown Whiting, part of 119 Street was still closed this morning after fire breaks out Sunday evening in a three-story building at 119^th and Sheridan, displacing several residents. The building houses a dress shop and several apartments. There was no word of any injuries. Fire crews were reportedly still on scene this morning, putting out and looking for hot spots. Residents of several apartments were reportedly displaced Sunday evening after fire broke out in a nearly one-hundred year old building in downtown Whiting. Fire crews were still on scene hours after getting the call Sunday. There were no immediate reports of injuries. No injuries were reported after a fire this afternoon in Whiting. The Times reports the fire occurred in a three-story building, located on the 14-hundred block of 119^th Street, which housed a dress business on the first floor and apartments on the second floor. Published reports say the fire began after 4pm this afternoon and the Red Cross was assisting displaced residents. No further information is available at this time.
