Gary Man Charged with Burglary at Fagen Pharmacy

A Gary man has been charged with one-count of burglary in connection to a break-in at Fagen Pharmacy early Wednesday morning. Authorities say they responded to an alarm around 3:30am, and the suspect was arrested at the scene after he was allegedly discovered in the store, located in the five-thousand block of East Dunes Highway....

The snow continues to fall across the Region and throughout northwest Indiana this morning. The National Weather Service in Chicago reports a Winter Weather Advisory continues for counties along the lakefront until noon CST today, with a total snow accumulation of three-to-six inches by late this morning. A Winter Storm Warning continues for the rest of northwest Indiana and to the south until noon CST today with a total snow accumulation of four-to-seven inches by late this morning with locally higher amounts possible. Authorities ask that if you must travel this morning, please give your self plenty of time to get to your destination, keep a safe distance between vehicles and slow down....
 

Colorado School Shooter Identified

The gunman who opened fire in a high school in suburban Denver Friday has been identified as 18-year-old Karl Pierson, according to local law enforcement.  ABC News reports Pierson, a student at Arapahoe High, allegedly shot a 15-year-old female student before taking his own life. Arapahoe County Sheriff Grayson Robinson told reporters there were several other victims who were not hurt physically.  Sheriff Robinson told reporters the girl remains in critical condition. ...
 

Colorado School Shooting Update

Local law enforcement officials say the person who entered Arapahoe High School, in Centennial, Colorado, with a shotgun today was on the hunt for a teacher. Two students were shot, one of the victims is in serious condition, and officials say they found the gunman inside the school dead. Arapahoe County Sheriff Grayson Robinson told reporters the county's active shooter protocol went into effect within minutes of the first gunshot.   Sheriff Robinson says, "those protocols, unfortunately, have had to be used far, far, far too many time in Colorado and across the United States because of these tragic episodes where people decide they've gotta even up the score with a weapon."
ABC News reports the shooter is a student at this school and the sheriff says that he believes there was only a lone gunman, that the shooter acted alone. Right now they are talking to people who knew the suspect, to try and figure out anything they can about whether there was a threat to the school or what might have motivated this student to open fire today....
 

Authorities Warning of Scammers Threatening Arrests

Police in Michigan City are warning residents in northwest Indiana of two recent scams circulating. One involves “collection agents” who claim you owe money to companies or on-line companies that you have written a check to in the past that has bounced or has not cleared. Police say the problem is the scammers somehow know you have actually written a check in the past and they threaten you by stating you'll be arrested if you don't pay the check and the fee. The second scam also threatens to arrest you if you don't pay a fine and scammers claim they work for Indiana State Police and have a warrant for your arrest. Authorities say an investigation into these scams of fabricated crime or debt continues, but often turn into a dead end as most of these calls originate from cell phones or call centers all over the U-S and tracking down the con artist is no easy task....
 

Gary Boy Injured After Shooting Himself in Shoulder

An investigation continues into a four-year old Gary boy who accidentally shot himself in the shoulder this morning in the 19-hundred block of Rhode Island Street. Gary Police report the child found the gun under a couch at his home and that his grandmother discovered the wound after hearing a “pop” sound. The boy was taken to a local hospital by his grandmother for treatment. Police say the owner of the gun did have a permit and was not arrested. At this time it is unknown if any charges have been filed, but police say the gun owner was expected to be questioned. ...

 

Chemical Plant Fire in Alsip Injures Two People

Two people are said to be injured after a plant explosion today in Alsip, Illinois. Officials with Blue Island Phenol Plant report the fire began around 11:30am and may have been due to a gas leak. The condition of the two injured is unknown at this time, and the rest of the employees of the chemical plant have been accounted for....
 

INDOT: Drivers Ready for Snowfall

INDOT reports crews were pre-treating the highways this afternoon and will begin patrolling roadways before the snow begins to fall and plow truck drivers for INDOT are rotating shifts in preparation of the snow. Once the snow begins to fall, INDOT reports crews will be plowing and treating interstates, US highways and state roads, with crews on the roads 24 hours a day, in alternating 12 hour shifts, as long as necessary to ensure the road conditions are safe. A Winter Weather Advisory begins at 10pm and continues through 6pm CST Saturday for region counties along the lake front. A Winter Storm Warning begins at 6pm CST tonight until Noon CST Saturday for the rest of northwest Indiana and to the south. ...
 

Shooter Dead, Two Injured in CO School Shooting

Police in Arapahoe County, Colorado, says the shooting incident at Arapahoe High School is over. ABC News reports Arapahoe County Sheriff Grayson Robinson says the shooter arrived armed at the school around noon, asking for a specific teacher. He was confronted by another student in the hall, who was then shot.  Sheriff Grayson says the shooter is dead as a result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound and there are no other threats at this time. One student has been injured and another is in critical condition.

 

Conservative Group Church Flier Targets Marriage Amendment

Advance America, a prominent Indiana conservative group, is sending out fliers to Hoosier churches warning of dire consequences if a proposed constitutional amendment banning gay marriage does not happen. According to published reports, the group states that allowing same-sex marriage would result in ministers facing hate-crimes and cross-dressing men in women's restrooms. Supporters of gay-rights report the group is just using misconception as scare tactics....
 

Suspect Charged with Shooting at a Michigan City Home

In Michigan City, a man is in custody for allegedly shooting at a home in the two-hundred block of Greene Street early Thursday morning. Michigan City Police report they initially received a call of shots fired with a suspicious white Cadillac being driven in the area, just before 3am, but no vehicle could be located and there was no damage or victim reported. Then just before 3:30am, a second call came stating the vehicle was back and shooting at a residence at the same location. Police say responding officers witnessed the suspect vehicle leaving the area and stopped it in the area of Main and Lafayette and took the driver, the lone occupant of the vehicle, into custody. Julian Mojica is charged with serious violent felon in possession of a firearm and criminal recklessness, both felonies. According to police, the home was struck by bullets and evidence was allegedly recovered from inside the suspect vehicle. ...
   

Wanatah Public Library to Use Grant $ for E-Books

The Wanatah Public Library is going to be receiving a four-thousand dollar grant for the funding of electronic books. Triple J-Mar Petroleum Inc. announced they secured the grant from the BP Fueling Communities Program from the library, which has selected Overdrive, one of the nation's largest e-book providers, to provide e-books to Wanatah and the surrounding areas....
   

Murder Suspect Could Be Found Incompetent for Trial

A 21 year old man charged with murder and felony robbery in the death of a retired Michigan City school teacher will learn next month whether or not he will sent to a mental institution. On Thursday, two-court appointed psychiatrists testified that Ryan Phelps is mentally incompetent to stand trial for the death of 69 year old Gerald Peters who was killed at his home in the three-hundred block of Walker Street. A judge is expected to make a decision at a hearing scheduled on January 23rd in LaPorte Superior Court One. Two other suspects in this case are awaiting sentencing after having pleaded guilty, with a third suspect yet to make a plea.

   

Five Charged in Lake Station Meth Lab Raid

Lake Station Police say the very first meth lab raid conducted in the history of the city has resulted in charges being filed against five people. Three Lake Station residents are charged with Class-A Felony Dealing in Methamphetamine and other charges, and two additional individuals from Hobart and Portage have been charged with-Misdemeanor Visiting a Common Nuisance. Lake Station Police Department raided an alleged meth lab in the 33-hundred block of Arizona Street, a residential area, on Wednesday shortly before 2 am. Lake Station Police Chief Kevin Garber says several members of the Indiana State Police Clandestine Drug Lab Team assisted Lake Station Police with processing the residence....
   

I-65 Lanes Reopen Near Crown Point

I-65 to Be Widened Near West Lafayette

A portion of I-65 will be widened just a little south of the Region. The Indiana Department of Transportation has announced the interstate will eventually have six lanes along the eight-mile West Lafayette corridor between State Roads 25 and 38 in Tippecanoe County. State officials say the project is meant to relieve congestion for motorists traveling from Chicago to Indianapolis. The work is scheduled to be finished by possibly late 2016, and the interstate will remain open during the project....
   

Missing Lansing Man Found Dead

The Cook County Medical Examiner's office says a body found in a ditch off Burnham Avenue in Lansing Thursday night is that of a Lansing man missing since last Friday. Police say 40-year-old Matthew Urdiales was last seen leaving a restaurant on Burnham Avenue in Lynwood about three miles to the south December 6th. Morgan Twp Elem Celebrates Being Blue Ribbon School

Happy faces in a sea of blue in the north bleachers of the John Blastick gym at Morgan Township Schools -- blue as in the color of the t-shirts the crowd was wearing proclaiming Morgan Township Elementary being named a 2013 National Blue Ribbon School.  A special celebration was held at Morgan November 22nd.   Earlier that week, Friesen-Carper and Riffer, accompanied by East Porter County School Superintendent Dr. Rod Gardin, were in Washington DC to receive the plaque and flag identifying Morgan Township Elementary as a National Blue Ribbon School.  Riffer was the teacher selected by her fellow staff members to attend the awards presentation - she has been teaching at Morgan Township Elementary for 34 years and attended Morgan school from kindergarten through 12th grade.  East Porter County Schools' Washington Township Elementary was also named a National Blue Ribbon School in 1997.  [Photo provided]...
   

Significant Snowfall Possible in the Region

Just as the Region exits the extreme cold snap, significant snowfall is possible entering the weekend.  Forecasters say up to eight inches could fall in some areas from Chicago into the Northeast. Some areas of upstate New York have already gotten four feet of lake-effect snow in the last couple days.
