Indiana Governor Mike Pence today signed into law Senate Enrolled Act 91, which requires Indiana to adopt its own academic standards in place national education standards, used by 45 states, known as Common Core. Governor Pence says, “By signing this legislation, Indiana has taken an important step forward in developing academic standards that are written by Hoosiers, for Hoosiers, and are uncommonly high, and I commend members of the General Assembly for their support.”
Critics of the measure say it does not prevent the state board from incorporating elements just like Common Core into Indiana's own college-and-career-prep guidelines and will cost the state millions of dollars to make these changes.
Indiana's new standards are scheduled to be released on April 14th, reviewed on April 21st, and if endorsed could be adopted by the State Board of Education on April 28th.
