Porter Regional Hospital today announced they are the first hospital in northwest Indiana/Chicagoland and one of only 35 sites chosen in the US to participate in a trial to implant the new Iforia implantable cardioverter defibrillator, or ICD, for use in an MRI.
ICD's protect patients from fatal heart rhythms and, until now, patients were not allowed to receive an MRI scan due to the risk the scanner may interfere with the function of the ICD.
The Center for Cardiovascular Medicine at Porter County Regional Hospital is evaluating the safety and efficacy of the new ICD's. Studies show an estimated 50-to-75 percent of patients with ICD's will need an MRI during their lifetime.
