A 40 year old Rensselaer woman died as the result of injuries sustained Tuesday evening in a multiple vehicle crash on US 231, about ten miles north of Rensselaer. The Jasper County Sheriff's Office reports an investigation revealed a Camaro driven by a 28 year old Rensselaer man was northbound, waiting for traffic so he could pull into a driveway on the west side of 231, when his vehicle was struck by a pickup. Authorities say the pickup driver told officers his brakes had failed to engage until his third attempt, at which time they locked. The impact sent the Camaro into oncoming southbound traffic where it struck an SUV driven by 40 year old Melissa Mathew, of Rensselaer, who was ejected onto the roadway after the impact resulted in her vehicle rolling over. The Camaro then struck a second southbound SUV and the impact caused both vehicles to come to rest in the southbound lane.
Mathew was taken to the hospital where she died a short time later. The driver of the Camaro was also hospitalized and was later treated and released. The crash caused 231 to be closed for about two-and-a-half hours.
