A maintenance and repair technician at Indiana Dunes State Park in Chesterton has received state recognition in part for his role in building a bird watching tower at the Dunes that DNR Director Cameron Clark called a “masterpiece”. Mike Bucheit of the DNR Division of State Parks and Reservoirs recently received the Colonel Richard Lieber Award, which is the agency's top civilian employee honor. State Park Property Manager Brandt Baughman says the tower is where the old water tower used to be above the west parking lot at the beach.
Baughman says the lumber used in the project was taken from trees damaged by tornadoes the southeastern Indiana a few years ago.
The tower is open with work underway currently to install a wheelchair ramp. Bucheit was also recognized for his problem solving and craftsmanship in diagnosing a recent problem with the park's wastewater treatment facility.
