An Aurora, Illinois, man is dead after a crash on the Indiana Toll Road in LaPorte County Sunday evening. Indiana State Police say a preliminary investigation revealed that shortly before 7:30 the car was westbound in the left lane when the driver, 56-year-old Maria Maldonado, tried to make a lane change, lost control of the car, went off to the right and hit the guardrail, then came across both westbound lanes, down the median and into the eastbound lanes, where the vehicle hit another guardrail and bounced into the path of a semi. Troopers say the passenger in the Honda, 57-year-old Robertino Maldonado, the driver's husband, had to be extricated and was pronounced dead at the scene. Police say Maria Maldonado was taken to South Bend Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The semi driver was not injured, police say. The semi was loaded with plastic products, troopers say, and the load of plastic stayed intact. Eastbound lanes except for the shoulder were closed until shortly before 9:30 pm.
