NWI Officer Named Officer of the Year

A northwest Indiana police officer has been named Indiana Police Officer of the Year by the Indiana American Legion. 45-year-old Portage Police Sgt. Mark Monks received the honor at the Indiana American Legion State Convention in Indianapolis this past weekend. Indiana American Legion Department commander Richard Jewel says they look at a number of criteria, including the officer's professional career and community service and outstanding acts in which the officer's been involved. Sgt Monks has been with the Portage Police department for 19 years. He lost his k-9 partner, Eros earlier this year, after the police dog was injured in the line of duty and was unable to fully recover.
