One of the scenes in Valpo after yesterday's storms
Northern Indiana Public Service Company says most customers without electrical service as of today should be back online by late this afternoon or early this evening (Wednesday July 25)... however, some customers may not be restored until end of day Thursday (July 26) or early Friday (July 27) due to extensive system repairs needed.
Some of the hard hit areas include Gary, Griffith, Hammond, Highland, Hobart/Lake Station, Munster, Schererville/Dyer, and Valparaiso.
NIPSCO says it was one of the most damaging storm events in the past five years. This morning more than eleven-thousand customers were without power... in all more than seventy-thousand lost electricity. Nearly two-thirds of total customers affected were restored within twelve hours.
There were about 15-thousand outages among members of the Kankakee Valley R-E-M-C. K-V REMC crews along with crews from neighboring cooperatives continue to work to restore power to about 19-hundred members and focusing on downed power lines caused by fallen trees along with many broken poles. Areas still experiencing outages include Chesterton, Valparaiso, Kouts, North Judson, Crown Point, Hanna and Knox.
