The Valparaiso City Council Monday night approved an ordinance that puts money aside for health insurance for city employees. Valparaiso City Administrator Bill Oeding says the city is receiving 73-thousand dollars more this year than last year in the EDIT Budget, and while the budget essentially stays the same, the difference this year is they are putting 550-thousand dollars aside for health insurance for employees, with 50-thousand of that going toward a program that works as a “safety net”, in case of a catastrophic event during the year, and they hit the max out-of pocket, this money could be given to the employee as a reimbursement.
Oeding says an employee committee will be named to disperse the funds to try and help soften the blow for a family or individual. He says since the employees have really not received any raises in about five-years, and when they raised their employee premiums, they wanted to get them a break by covering some of the expenses.
He says the City of Valparaiso employs almost 300 people, and including spouses and dependents, more like 700 to take care of.
