East Chicago PD 2012 Crime Stats

East Chicago PD
The East Chicago Police Department recently released their 2012 crime statistics, reporting a 13-percent reduction in violent crime from 2011 and a five-percent drop in property crimes from the previous year, for a six-percent decrease in total crimes overall from 2011 totals. Chief Mark Becker says he is pleased with the numbers because in 2011, East Chicago was designated as the most violent city in Northwest Indiana on a per capita basis, and now homicides, of which three were reported in 2012, are the lowest since 1975, and total crime is the lowest it has been in several directions.
Chief Becker credits the drop in crime to community participation, saying it is important that the community knows and trusts the police department, which makes them more apt to contact the police when crime occurs. The Chief says his department plans on continuing patrols through neighborhoods, establishing additional neighborhood watch groups to link different sections of the community together, and they are also planning on starting an aggressive patrol team in 2013, which is hoped to be used as a”stop-gap” and address issues that regular hour patrols are unable to address.
A break down and total for each of the 8 crimes that consist of the FBI’s UCR report are as follows:
Violent Crimes (222) A reduction of 13% from 2011 total (255)
  • Murder -3
  • Rape- 9
  • Robbery – 90
  • Aggravated Assault – 120
Property Crimes (1,851) A reduction of 5% from 2011 total (1,941)
  • Burglary – 594
  • Larceny – 1,064
  • Vehicle Theft – 190
  • Arson - 3
Total Crimes (2,073) A reduction of 6% from 2011 total (2,196)
