The issue of gun violence part of last night's State of the Union Address as President Obama, in the final minutes of his speech, called on Congress to at least call a vote on gun control. Gary Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson says an upcoming two-state gun summit in her city this week, scheduled after getting a call from Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart in Illinois, is also a result of efforts with Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and mayors across the country, and Mayor Freeman-Wilson, in an initiative called Mayors Against Gun Violence. The mayor told the Region News Team she believes there are ways to fight gun violence, through background checks, for instance, or limiting certain types of firearms, that won't infringe on people's rights. "You can't have a hand grenade," the Mayor said, "so why not say that we want to look at how we regulate guns and the use of weapons in our society".
At this weeks "Gun Trafficking Suppression Summit," the city of Gary will be hosting law enforcement from Indiana and Illinois to discuss strategies to prevent guns from falling into the wrong hands, and how to stop the flow of interstate gun trafficking.
