President Obama and Mitt Romney matched each other state for state in early returns as attention turned to a trio of swing states where polls had closed but results were so close a winner had yet to emerge. The electoral votes of Ohio, Virginia and Florida are vital to each candidate's success. In Virginia and Florida, lines stretched from some polling places even after they had officially closed.
North Carolina elected its a Republican governor for the first time in more than two decades tonight. GOP candidate Pat McCrory, a former Charlotte mayor who had been leading in local polls in the final days leading up to Election Day, defeated Democratic candidate Walter Dalton, the state's lieutenant governor. It's the first time the first time the state has elected a Republican governor since 1988.
Democrats grabbed the first two gubernatorial wins of Election Day with victories in Vermont and Delaware, two states that ABC News projects will also go to President Obama. Despite the early wins in the Democrats' column, Republicans are still aiming for a historic election night in governor races.

In the first three states to finish voting tonight, Mitt Romney and President Obama each scored early wins, but there were no surprises as the rest of the country continues to vote. Based on preliminary exit polls and our analysis of the vote in so far, ABC News projects that Obama will win Vermont, and Romney, his Republican challenger, will win Indiana and Kentucky.
