The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will update the public next week on cleanup progress at the 79-acre U.S. Smelter & Lead Refinery, or U-S-S Lead, Superfund site in East Chicago. All operations ended there in 1985. It originally opened as a copper smelter in 1906, before becoming a lead refinery in 1920, and then was converted to a secondary lead smelter in the early seventies, recovering lead from auto batteries Environmental officials say contamination includes a slag pile in the southeast portion of wetlands on the property. The Superfund site boundaries are Chicago Avenue to the north, Parrish to the east, 151st on the south, and Aster to the west. The public information meeting is from 6 to 8 p.m. at the East Chicago Public Library July 25th.
