Some area girls in the region are celebrating their recent accomplishments in a nationwide cheer competition that took place earlier this week in Orlando, Florida. Pop Warner Cheer Coordinator Patti Jo Hamiliton says the South County Pop Warner program, made up of 12 third-through-6th grade girls, from LaCrosse, South Central, Wanatah, and Westville schools, placed ninth in the nation out of 16 teams on Tuesday. Hamilton says the achievement is especially rewarding because the girls are not coached by professionals, but by parents with very little knowledge of cheer. Hamilton says the rest of the region was also well represented, with teams from Boone Grove, Chesterton, Highland, LaPorte, two from Michigan City, two from North Judson, Tri-Town, and Valparaiso, all competing in the nationals in Florida for different levels of competition. Hamilton says they have dealt with a lot of trials and tribulations, between illnesses and injuries, and being from small communities they do frequent fund raising, as it cost at least 800-dollars per child to go to the national competition in the non-profit program.
